Fifty Shades of Grey Reviews

The mystifying publishing sensation of 2012

I thought I’d start putting these all in one place, for anyone interested in reading them all. These are my highly irreverent reviews for Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James. Some of you may know that the novel started life as a Twilight fanfiction, and James simply changed the names and took out the supernatural elements. A lot of people wonder how it ever got published. So do I, hence my reviews.

Disclaimer: If you are easily offended, you might want to look away now, as the reviews (and the book for that matter) contain such words as: ‘it’, ‘down there’ and ‘considerable length’.

Disclaimer 2: These reviews are my opinions on the books and mine alone. I know that many people have read the book and enjoyed it, and I don’t deny them that in any way. Their reading experience is just as valid as mine. Therefore, my comments are only about the book as I see it. I’m not having a dig at the readership at all.

  1. Ha! Loving your work :) My own review was just as scathing, but far more succinct ;) http://normalinlondon.wordpress.com/2012/06/19/fifty-shades-of-grey-e-l-james/

  2. Fantastic stuff, Sally! keep it up (and no, no sexual innuendo intended!)

Thank you, I enjoyed the books but have to say I have not stopped laughing the whole way through your reviews (except for the serious bits). I have to agree about the writing, the blow by blow account of every single minute is unnecessary, I’m amazed she only mentions bathroom needs once based on all the other detail. However I have read all 3 books over the last 5 days or so and have enjoyed them more than anything else I’ve read recently so I guess there’s no accounting for taste. Thanks again for a good read x

I have recently finished book 3 and have to say I did enjoy them more towards the last book. I found book 1 a bit to slow, book 2 more interesting as the story line picked up pace and found some really good writing in book 3. I did however hate the tediousness of the e.mails which could have been presented in a less boring way.
Over all 7/10 score from me, I have read better and I have read a lot worse.
I look forward to E L James next work, it seems she bets better with each book.

  5. These are AWESOME. What else shall I say.

  6. I recently re-read these after recommending them to a friend. Absolutely hilarious.
